The failure of the independence movement
Puerto Rico is a laboratory of failed political movements. The estadolibrismo (Commonwealth) and the annexation(Statehood ) do not matter to me. Let them drown in their swamp.
Convinced that independence is the only option for Puerto Rico, it matters to me that the independentistas(pro-independence) recognize the failure of the political project that we have tried to carry out and undertake a new one.
The time has come to accept it without seeking excuses or guilty from others. How much it costs us to internalize that losing a battle does not mean losing the war!
The old battle plan does not take us where we are going. We have an army in disarray with riots on board. New strategies are required, new battalions, new weapons.
We have to verbalize failure and exorcise guilt. With our flashes of glory and our clear heroes, but without romanticism. Accepting a failure is not weakness. It can be strength if we become masters of it and forgive ourselves without penance. We must accept the size and tricks of the enemy to build new weapons and better tricks. Discard the resentment that produces frustration and makes us our worst adversaries in a fratricidal struggle of exclusion. Discard those who can not get rid of resentment. Let them fight alone. We are capable enough to fight with love.
Many of us feel better independentistas every day, but that satisfaction is as individualistic as the ideology and ethics of the enemy that we fight.
We must begin by recognizing that terms that are common and necessary do not make sense to many people outside of us.
Some call it narrative, others call it speech. As you want to call it, the independents(pro-independence forces) have to update it.
For many Puerto Ricans, independence means that to drink milk they have to go out every day to milk the cow. The offer is of «value and sacrifice». We have to change that for the idea of independence as the pursuit of common happiness, as a joyful project whose goal is that we all enjoy a better country.
That has been our Achilles heel. That we can not explain the independence of appeasing the needs of people, but of our intellectual rhetoric of socialism and patriotism, which can be quite depressin
When we are asked to explain what the economy would be like in the republic, we can not respond with an economic treaty. We have to talk about rice and beans and we have not been able to do it because we insist on explaining first what is the class struggle and neoliberalism. In that they make their first profession of faith against colonialism and for the death of the tyrant. When we arrive at the concrete answer, the countryman is snoring or has left us aside.
Better the other way around The conclusion first and how we got to it later. In any learning process, the best method is the one that provokes the questions for the following explanation. The «And why?» Of children who determine what they want to know and when: their rate of learning.
Sound simple? Well, that simplicity is what we need to offer independence as an option.
By the way, organizations have to admit their organizational failure and consider disappearing or transforming themselves. Otherwise, they will have to be pushed aside. Losing so much time in attacking them and defending them blinds us.
I propose to start with three consensuses: (1) how to decolonize without proposing a perfect independence; (2) what is the economic project that we can propose in rice and beans; and (3) how to integrate the diaspora into the project to drive change by pushing all together.
The independence movement has succeeded in surviving the bloodiest battles. He survived but he lost it. Now he has to prepare to use that life to win the war.

Puerto Rico es un laboratorio de movimientos políticos fracasados. El estadolibrismo y el anexionismo no me importan. Que se ahoguen en su pantano.
Convencida de que la independencia es la única opción para Puerto Rico, me importa que los independentistas reconozcamos el fracaso del proyecto político que hemos tratado de llevar a término y emprender uno nuevo.
Ha llegado el momento de aceptarlo sin buscar excusas ni culpables ajenos. ¡Qué mucho nos cuesta internalizar que perder una batalla no implica perder la guerra!
El viejo plan de batalla no nos está llevando a donde nos propusimos. Tenemos un ejército en desbandada con motines a bordo. Se requieren nuevas estrategias, batallones frescos, armas nuevas.
Tenemos que verbalizar el fracaso y exorcizar la culpa. Con nuestros destellos de gloria y nuestros héroes bien claros, pero sin romanticismos.
Aceptar un fracaso no es debilidad. Puede ser fortaleza si nos hacemos dueños de él y nos perdonamos sin penitencias. Hay que aceptar el tamaño y las tretas del enemigo para construir armas nuevas y tretas mejores. Descartar el resentimiento que nos produce la frustración y nos convierte en nuestros peores adversarios en una riña fratricida de exclusión. Descartar a los que no pueden despojarse del resentimiento. Que peleen solos. Quedamos suficientes capaces de hacer la lucha con amor.
Muchos nos sentimos mejores independentistas cada día, pero esa satisfacción es tan individualista como la ideología y ética del enemigo que combatimos.
Deberíamos empezar por reconocer que los términos que nos son comunes y necesarios no le hacen sentido a mucha gente fuera de nosotros.
Algunos le llaman narrativa, otros le llaman discurso. Como quieran llamarlo, los independentistas tenemos que actualizarlo.
Para muchos puertorriqueños la independencia significa que para beber leche tiene que salir todos los días a ordeñar la vaca. La oferta es de “valor y sacrificio”. Tenemos que cambiar eso por la idea de la independencia como la búsqueda de la felicidad común, como un proyecto alegre cuyo fin es que todos disfrutemos de un mejor país.
Ese ha sido nuestro talón de Aquiles. Que no nos podemos explicar la independencia desde aplacar las necesidades de la gente, sino desde nuestra retórica intelectual del socialismo y el patriotismo, que puede ser bastante lúgubre.
Cuando nos piden explicar cómo sería la economía en la república no podemos responder con un tratado de economía. Tenemos que hablar en arroz y habichuelas y no lo hemos sabido hacer porque nos empeñamos en explicar primero lo que es la lucha de clases y el neoliberalismo. En que hagan primero profesión de fe contra el coloniaje y por la muerte del tirano. Cuando llegamos a la respuesta concreta ya el paisano está roncando o se nos ha ido del lado.
Mejor al revés. La conclusión primero y cómo llegamos a ella después.En cualquier proceso de aprendizaje, el mejor método es el que provoca las preguntas para la próxima explicación. El “¿Y por qué?” de los niños que determinan lo que quieren saber y cuando – su ritmo de aprendizaje.
¿Suena simple? Pues esa simpleza es la que necesitamos para ofrecer la independencia como opción.
Por cierto, las organizaciones tienen que admitir también su fracaso organizativo y plantearse desaparecer o transformarse. De lo contrario, habrá que echarlas a un lado. Perder tanto tiempo en atacarlas y en defenderlas nos amarra.
Yo propongo partir de tres consensos: (1) cómo descolonizar sin plantear la independencia perfecta; (2) cuál es proyecto económico que podemos proponer en arroz y habichuelas; y (3) cómo integrar la diáspora al proyecto para presionar el cambio empujando todos juntos.
El movimiento independentista ha sido exitoso en sobrevivir la más cruenta de las batallas. Sobrevivió pero la perdió. Ahora tiene que disponerse a usar esa vida para ganar la guerra.
