The origin of modern colonialism

The conquest of Al-Andalus, in the southern part of the Iberia peninsula, was the training ground for the colonialism that was practiced after 1492 all over the world. The colonized people were used as forced labor, and their knowledge was either destroyed or stolen by the conquerors.

Why is the knowledge taught in schools all over the world racist and sexist? It is, because it represents the knowledge of only white males from 5 western nations (France, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, and Italy). Why is that important to highlight?

No matter what university in the world a student studies at, he is being taught knowledge that originated from these supposedly “intellectually superior nations” that only represent 12% of the world, and with the intention that he should apply it. But in reality, that “universal truth” is the result of the experiences of only those countries, and therefore irrelevant to the experiences of 88% of humanity.

The canon of thought used in universities around the world today is designed to make inferior the knowledge of the rest of humanity. Thus, if we don’t decolonize education, we will inevitably continue to produce minds ideal for the eternal exploitation of the world.

We have to decolonize education to decolonize minds.

Jose M Lopez Ismael
