The obscene US’ «democracy»

By José M. López Sierra – Puerto Rico

Despite the United States’ (US) claim of being the champion of democracy, it’s so-called «democracy» is obscene to say the least!

How could the US be a democracy, when 40 million Americans today live in poverty, and 201 million more live from paycheck to paycheck, while 9 of the 10 richest men in the world are US citizens? Especially when the People’s Republic of China, a nation that the US calls authoritarian while 90% of the Chinese are satisfied with their government, eradicated poverty in 2020, despite having 4 times the US’ population.

How could the US be a democracy, when the US provoked the war in Ukraine in order to weaken the Russian Federation to steal her resources? Today, instead of the Ruble turning to rubble, it is the US dollar!

How could the US be a democracy, when the US has supported the genocide against the indigenous people of Palestine against international law?

How could the US be a democracy, when it imposes tariffs on all countries to finance tax cuts for its oligarchs, while it makes prices for the 97% of US employees higher?

And, how could the US be a democracy, when it has consistently refused to comply with 42 United Nations’ resolutions demanding the immediate return of Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. And in the meantime, 6 million Puerto Ricans have abandoned their national territory (gentrification), and half of the 3 million people in Puerto Rico live in poverty. This year’s UN Puerto Rico decolonization hearing will be on Monday, June 16, 2025.

The US is an empire.
