Make US a real democracy

By Jose M. Lopez Sierra – Puerto Rico

The United States’ (US) claims that it is the champion of democracy. If that is so, it is also the champion of contradictions.

Do you know that the world regards the US as the biggest threat to peace?

Do you know that only 35% of US citizens are satisfied with their government, while over 90% of Chinese are satisfied with theirs? The US says that the People’s Republic of China is its biggest enemy!

Did you know that while China eradicated poverty in 2020 despite having 4 times the US’ population, 40 million Americans still live in poverty today, and 201 million more live from paycheck to paycheck? However, 9 of the 10 richest men in the world are Americans too!

Do you know that the US started the war in Ukraine in order to steal the wealth of the Russian Federation? The US is now using proxies in its rich men’s wars in order to avoid the protest at home that it experienced during its Vietnam war.

Do you know that the US is supporting today the genocide against the indigenous people of Palestine against international law?

And, do you know that the US claims to support Taiwan’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence, while it has consistently refused to comply with 43 United Nations’ resolutions demanding the immediate return of Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans? In the meantime, 6 million Puerto Ricans have abandoned their national territory (gentrification), and half of the 3 million people in Puerto Rico live in poverty too. The UN’s annual Puerto Rico decolonization hearing was on Monday, June 16, 2025 (click here to watch it https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1l/k1ldmeahv6).

Who needs authoritarianism with a US «democracy» like this?

Jose M Lopez Ismael
