About half of Puerto Ricans living in Puerto Rico want her to become the 51st state of the United States (US), after being a US colony for the past 124 years. How did Puerto Ricans get to that?
Puerto Rico had self-government at the time (1897) that the US militarily invaded her in 1898 to make her a US colony. Therefore, Puerto Rico was already a democracy, but the US didn’t care about that! How do we know that?
The US made sure that the Treaty of Paris of 1898 indicated that the rights of Puerto Ricans shall be determined by the US. In essence, that made Puerto Ricans US slaves. The Treaty of Paris of 1898 is still in effect today!
The US imposed her citizenship on Puerto Ricans in 1917 to try to steer our natural national loyalty towards the US.
Although today, the US says that she supports the sovereignty of Ukraine, Hong Kong and Taiwan, she has violently suppressed the independence movement in Puerto Rico. The book “War against all Puerto Ricans” by Nelson Denis is about that.
The US talks about a rule-based order in connection to her brand of “democracy”. The US avoids talking about “international law”, because she has never complied with it. However, the rule-based order are rules that she unilaterally makes up as she sees fit.
That’s why the US today violates the United Nations’ (UN) Charter of 1945 that prohibits colonialism for being a crime against humanity. And that’s why the US has ignored 41 UN resolutions asking her to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzBslJLbI0
Half of the Puerto Ricans living in Puerto Rico live in poverty. Puerto Rican politicians have sold the idea to Puerto Ricans that statehood is the answer to our poverty, instead of selling the idea that, with our sovereignty, we could solves our own problems.
Despite Puerto Rico being a colony, some Puerto Ricans will celebrate US Independence Day today in Cataño, Puerto Rico. They will be celebrating the independence of the nation that has denied consistently our own independence. If that is not what Noam Chomsky’s book, Manufacturing Consent is about, than I didn’t learn a thing!
