US democracy crumpled in Afghanistan

By José M. López Sierra – Puerto Rico

The democracy installed in Afghanistan 20 years ago crumpled the minute the United States (US) government (USG) ended its military occupation there. Maybe that was never the real reason!

After the enormous suffering by many people, and the fact that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has been investigating US war crimes there, the fact of the matter is that the US Military Complex, and the 1% of US citizens made a lot of money from it! Puerto Rico followed that same pattern 123 years earlier.

Puerto Ricans had acquired self-government from Spain in 1897. The USG, however, decided to militarily invade Puerto Rico. That could not have been to bring her democracy, because what the USG did was make her its colony. The Treaty of Paris of 1898 tells it all. It says that the rights of Puerto Ricans shall be determined by the USG. In other words, Puerto Ricans have no right that the USG has to respect. And that is still the law of the land today!

The USG has never complied with the United Nations’ (UN) Charter that prohibits colonialism for the past 76 years. The USG has ignored 40 UN resolutions asking it to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. Since 1776, the US’ foreign policy has never been about spreading democracy around the world. It has always been about making the 1% of US citizens even richer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzBslJLbI0

US democracy crumpled in Afghanistan, because US democracy is only an illusion. If we want a real democracy, the 99% of us will have to make that happen!

Make the US finally a real democracy!
