Oligarchs killed the American Dream

By José M. López Sierra

United States’ (US) politicians who have allowed oligarchs to govern the US exclusively for themselves are the ones responsible for killing the American Dream for the 99% of US citizens. The irony is that the US says that China is a dictatorship, yet 90% of Chinese are satisfied with their government, while only 33% of Americans are satisfied with ours.

Today 38 million Americans live in poverty, while China has eradicated her poverty since 2020. It is important to note that China has done that, despite having 4 times the US’ population!

And, while the US calls itself the champion of democracy, 9 of the 10 richest men in the world are US citizens. Ironically, US “democracy” prioritizes having 800 military bases all around the world, because it doesn’t believe in diplomacy, over providing essential services for 99% of its citizens.

The US has also killed Puerto Rico’s dream by maintaining her as its colony for the past 126 years. The United Nation (UN) held its annual Puerto Rico decolonization hearing on Thursday, June 20, 2024. You could watch that hearing by clicking these links: https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1w/k1wb1xdn6i and https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k15/k154ku9q8x.

The UN issued, on that date, yet another resolution that says exactly the same thing as all the other 41 resolutions. The UN demands that the US immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans.

The US will ignore that one too, because it is not a government of, by, and for the people. The US’ government is for oligarchs to win at the expense of everybody else.

US’ win-lose has killed the American Dream.
