More UN lip service

By José M. López Sierra – Puerto Rico

After World War II and the subsequent Nuremberg Trials to sentence Nazis for war crimes, the United Nations (UN) declared colonialism a crime against humanity. That is in its Charter of 1945.

After 16 years of some UN member states not complying with the prohibition of colonialism, the UN decided to create a committee in 1961, the Decolonization Committee (C-24), to oversee decolonization. https://www.un.org/dppa/decolonization/en/c24/about

After 45 years of some UN member states still not complying with decolonization, the UN decided in 1990 to declare international decades for the eradication of colonialism. https://www.un.org/dppa/decolonization/en/history/international-decades

After 76 years of some UN member states still not complying with decolonization, the UN has once again declared the 4th International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism which began in January 1, 2021. Is this just more UN lip service? Yes. Why?

Next month, in June, the UN should be holding its annual Puerto Rico decolonization hearing usually on the Monday after Fathers’ Day. In these hearings, the C-24 listens to petitioners, many of whom come from Puerto Rico.

At this late date, the UN still has not published in its website how petitioners are to request their participation at that hearing. How are they supposed to make their requests “in good time”? https://www.un.org/dppa/decolonization/en/contact

Through the years, petitioners have asked the UN to put Puerto Rico back on its list of colonies. The UN has refused to.

The UN chooses to call that list, “Non Self-Governing Territories.” It is important to note that the United States (US) government (USG) lied to get Puerto Rico off the list by alleging that she had acquired self-government in 1952.

The UN does not widely publicize the June Puerto Rico decolonization hearing in the media, although New York City has the second largest concentration of Puerto Ricans in the US.

The UN has refused to broadcast live its annual June Puerto Rico decolonization hearing. Click on the following link to watch our live coverage of the 2016 hearing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzBslJLbI0

Lip service is reformism. Protesting now, tomorrow, and forever to force the USG to comply with international law is revolutionary.

More Boricuas live today away from our national territory than in. Therefore, it is up to us be engage in permanent resistant to decolonize Boriken. If we don’t, we ought to expect more lip service now, tomorrow and forever! www.TodosUnidosDescolonizarPR.blogspot.com

Lip service is cheap!
