Last year to eradicate colonialism

By José M. López Sierra – Puerto Rico

The United Nations (UN) has one more year to eradicate colonialism. It is in its 3rd international decade to do that. Why is it taking so long? https://www.un.org/dppa/decolonization/en/history/international-decades

The UN is a rubber stamp for the nations that have colonies. These empires were the winners of World War II, and designed the UN so that they could do whatever they want with impunity.

The United States Government (USG) lied to the UN in 1953 to get Puerto Rico off its list of colonies. The USG alleged that Puerto Rico had attained self-government in 1952 by virtue of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. That is a camouflage to hide its colony.

The UN celebrates every June a hearing to discuss Puerto Rico’s decolonization. The hearing is usually on the Monday after Fathers’ Day. Here are some examples to demonstrate that the UN is dragging its feet!

You would have expected the UN to automatically put Puerto Rico back on its list of colonies as soon as it realized the USG’s deception. The UN, despite many petitioners asking it to do so, has not in 66 years. Therefore, the UN has allowed that the oldest and the most populated colony in the world is not on its list.

The annual Puerto Rico decolonization hearing in June is not advertised in the media contrary to UN regulation to amply inform the public about decolonization. I bought the New York Daily News, the New York Post, and the New York Times the day before the 2019 hearing in New York City, and nothing was mentioned about it and the fact that the USG has been committing a crime against humanity by maintaining Puerto Rico as its colony for the past 121 years! You would think that that would be news in a city with a Puerto Rican population of 723,621!

The UN does not regularly broadcast live on radio and television its Puerto Rico decolonization hearing. Does that help in the eradication of colonialism?

We tried in 2015 to get the UN to broadcast the hearing live, and it ignored us. We decided to do it ourselves in 2016. The UN apparently didn’t like it, because suddenly my name wasn’t on the list of petitioners for that year’s hearing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzBslJLbI0

Various groups campaigned in 2019 to get the UN to broadcast the hearing live. The UN consented, however, it did not broadcast the afternoon session: Click here to watch the morning session: http://webtv.un.org/watch/5th-meeting-committee-of-24-special-committee-on-decolonization/6051725003001/

Therefore, Puerto Ricans can’t expect the UN to ever decolonize Puerto Rico on its own. Where do we go from here?

We have to create a tsunami of almost 9 million Puerto Ricans worldwide to engage in permanent resistance to force the USG to comply with the UN’s Charter that prohibits colonialism since 1945, and the 38 UN resolutions asking it to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans.

Be a part of the Boricua tsunami, because those who want to have colonies today, tomorrow and forever don’t believe in LIBERTY AND IN JUSTICE FOR ALL! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1697349163904877/

It won’t happen unless we push it!
