The difference between independence and reformism

by José M. López Sierra – Puerto Rico

Congressman Luis Gutierrez’s intervention in the United States Congress, in this video, illustrates perfectly what the majority of Puerto Ricans leaders have done during the past 120 years to try to better the conditions for Puerto Ricans in their national territory. Luis talked as though he were a nationalist advocating for Puerto Rico independence for 80% of this video. Then, suddenly, he makes an about face, when he asked Congress to allow Puerto Ricans to be prosperous in their national territory! That defined him as a reformist.

All Puerto Ricans have been indoctrinated since birth with United States Government (USG) propaganda. Despite the fact that he articulated eloquently the history of the problem, his brainwashing surfaced to recommend an illogical solution.

Luis’ advice that Congress should allow Puerto Ricans to be prosperous in their homeland proves that he is unable to realize that the USG invaded militarily Puerto Rico to purposely exploit her. Therefore, what Luis is asking for is for the USG to do the opposite of that. And, if Congress were to do that, what would have been the purpose of the USG having Puerto Rico as its colony since 1898?

It is important to also highlight that Luis didn’t make the most convincing argument that an un-colonized person could have made. He did not argue that colonialism is a crime against humanity under international law, and that the USG ought to comply with the United Nations’ (UN) Charter that prohibits colonialism. Nor did he remind Congress that it has ignored 37 UN resolution asking the USG to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. It is, as though for Luis, that doesn’t exist at all! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzBslJLbI0

The best book to learn about how reformism has impeded Puerto Rico’s independence was written by Juan Antonio Corretjer in 1949. Click here to read it online: https://www.keepandshare.com/doc/6462438/01lucha-por-la-independ-pdf-517k?da=y

My proposal is for every Boricua to engage in permanent resistance to force the USG to comply with the desire of the international community, because those who continue to squeeze Puerto Ricans out of their homeland, don’t believe in LIBERTY AND FOR JUSTICE FOR ALL! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1697349163904877/

Be on the patriot side.
