MESSAGE FROM OSCAR ON HIS 74th BIRTHDAY:
I have lived in this world for 74 years, and for me it has been a great blessing. I can affirm that i have lived because I have transcended some of the many challenges i’ve had to face, and have continued struggling to transcend the ones I haven’t transcended. Starting very early in my life I refused to turn my back on any adversity or injustice I faced. The drive to push on and to face whatever comes my way has made it possible for me to accumulate experiences that have made me very grateful to have lived all these years.
I’m hopeful that i’ll be able to come out of prison and dedicate whatever time I have left in this world to work and to struggle to help resolve the greatest issue we face. That’s the issue of resolving Puerto Rico’s colonial status. Without the resolution of that issue Puerto Ricans will not enjoy a dignified, secured, productive and healthy life. We will not experience free will and self-determination. We will not be allowed to be a member of the community of nations. We will be pariahs in our own land if we are lucky enough to live on it. I dare say we will live like the natives in Hawaii, Alaska and in the Native Americans’ reservations. What happens to the people who lose their homeland? Sean Amery, a survivor of Hitler’s concentration camps, because did not find a homeland once he was released wrote the following: «Woe to him who has no home». And by home he meant a homeland. I love my homeland even though it is the oldest colony in the world. And it is why I keep on saying that to love Puerto Rico costs nothing. What would be costly is if we lose it.
I have faith in us being able to eradicate colonialism. And i’m certain the majority of the Puerto Rican people love Puerto Rico. The only people in Puerto Rico who don’t love Puerto Rico are the ones who prostitute it, who sell it and who don’t identify themselves as Puerto Ricans. The ones who love Puerto Rico have a heart full of love for freedom and justice and of compassion. We are a people who have dared to struggle and have dared to live. We are a courageous, sensitive, proud and creative people. And since the problems we face are man created we can resolve them and transform PR into the nation it has the potential for being. We can look up to the space above our homeland and see the potential Puerto Rico has. We can look at the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and see the potential PR has. We can feel the fresh air on our skin and the warm sun on our bodies and see the potential PR has. We can look at the earth we stand on and see the potential PR has. We can look at ourselves and see the human potential that we have. And it is that human potential that will drive us to eradicate colonialism and to transform our beloved homeland into the edenic garden it has the potential of being. We can do it. Let’s dare to live and let’s dare to struggle. Then we will live as a free people without any colonial chains. We can be a Big Family like Don Rosendo Matienzo Cintròn used to say. We can be a nation of communities and each community making itself stronger by working together. We can be 8 million strong by uniting the Puerto Ricans in the diaspora with the Puerto Ricans in our small Archipelago.
Let’s dare to struggle and let’s dare to live.

He vivido en este mundo durante 74 años, y para mí ha sido una gran bendición. Puedo afirmar que he vivido porque he trascendido algunos de los muchos desafíos que he tenido que enfrentar, y he seguido luchando por superar los que no he trascendido. Empezando muy temprano en mi vida me negué a dar la espalda a cualquier adversidad o injusticia que me enfrenté. El camino para empujar y enfrentar lo que me viene a mi manera ha hecho posible acumular experiencias que me han hecho muy agradecido de haber vivido todos estos años.
Espero poder salir de la cárcel y dedicar el tiempo que me queda en este mundo para trabajar y luchar para ayudar a resolver el problema más grande que nos enfrentamos. Esa es la cuestión de resolver la situación colonial de Puerto Rico. Sin la resolución de esa cuestión, los puertorriqueños no disfrutan de una vida digna, garantizada, productiva y saludable. No vamos a experimentar la libre voluntad y la libre determinación. No se nos permitirá ser miembro de la comunidad de naciones. Vamos a ser parias en nuestra propia tierra si tenemos la suerte de vivir con ello. Me atrevo a decir que vamos a vivir como los nativos de Hawai, Alaska y las reservas de los nativos americanos. Qué le pasa a la gente que pierde su patria? Sean Amery, un superviviente de los campos de concentración de Hitler, porque no encontramos una patria una vez que fue liberado escribió lo siguiente: «ay de él que no tiene hogar». y en casa se refería a una patria. Amo a mi patria aunque sea la colonia más antigua del mundo. Y es por eso que me mantengo diciendo que amar Puerto Rico no cuesta nada. Lo que sería costoso si lo perdemos.
Tengo fe en que somos capaces de erradicar el colonialismo. Y estoy seguro de que la mayoría del pueblo puertorriqueño ama a Puerto Rico. El único pueblo de Puerto Rico que no ama Puerto Rico son los que la prostituta, que lo venden y que no se identifican como puertorriqueños. Los que aman Puerto Rico tienen un corazón lleno de amor por la libertad y la justicia y de la compasión. Somos una gente que se ha atrevido a luchar y se ha atrevido a vivir. Somos una gente valiente, sensible, orgullosa y creativa. Y ya que los problemas que enfrentamos son hombres creados podemos resolverlos y transformar pr en la nación que tiene el potencial de ser. Podemos mirar al espacio por encima de nuestra patria y ver el potencial de Puerto Rico. Podemos mirar el océano Atlántico y el mar caribe y ver el potencial de relaciones públicas. Podemos sentir el aire fresco en nuestra piel y el sol caliente en nuestros cuerpos y ver el potencial de PR. Podemos mirar la tierra en la que nos soportar y ver el potencial de PR. Podemos mirar a nosotros mismos y ver el potencial humano que tenemos. Y es que el potencial humano que nos llevará a erradicar el colonialismo y transformar nuestra amada patria en el jardín de edenic tiene el potencial de ser. Podemos hacerlo. Nos atrevemos a vivir y nos atrevemos a luchar. Entonces podremos vivir como gente libre sin ninguna cadena colonial. Podemos ser una gran familia como don Rosendo Matienzo Cintron solía decir. Podemos ser una nación de comunidades y cada comunidad se hace cada vez más fuerte trabajando juntos. Podemos ser de 8 millones de fuertes uniendo a los puertorriqueños en la diáspora con los puertorriqueños en nuestro pequeño archipiélago.
Atrévete a luchar y vamos a atreves a vivir.
